You two, stop crushing young hopeful minds
In TBC there’s a lot of gear that you can make that’s easily equal to instance gear, and not even particularly difficult to get. A few hours farming some wind elementals to be able to craft some bracers or a few hours in a dungeon for some bracers which may or may not drop, or if they do drop, may go to another hunter in the group?
Dragonscale is definitely the route to take for the 350 skill chest for level 65 and the epic 3 piece set at skill level 375 for level 70. However, you’ll still be able to make a lot of mail gear even if you aren’t specced Dragonscale, such as the Felscale and Felstalker items. For straght dps, its actually quite hard to find a good replacement for the gloves and boots, which can be got early on (level 57 and 61 respectively).
Rapp and striv are right though, its something of a chore to level a non-gathering profession, and it will net you less gold than selling the raw materials would, but that’s only at lower levels. Once you’re crafting items requiring Primal Nethers, you’ll definitely start earning a lot of money. Ironically though, that means running a lot of
Using a profession to provide items, be it armor, weapons, potions, etc, just isn’t that feasible while leveling up. It works well till about level 20, but unless you specifically focus alot of time leveling your profession (which can get expensive) your character will outlevel the effectiveness of your profession fairly fast.-Striveldt

Back into FFXI while waiting for FFXIVIf you must spec leatherworking, you should go with dragonscale (only one to give you mail armor at 40). Be warned that you will spend a lot of time and money making this gear that isn’t quite as good as what you can find in drops from instances.
